This is an interesting question. Hypothetically, if the parents can get in, the young birds should be able to get out. Carolina Wrens can use a box with a 1 inch opening, but 1 1/8 inch would be better. Every different species that uses nest boxes have preferred size opening. Often when building a box for a particular species, the concern is not to make the entrance hole too big. The recommended sizes are close to the smallest hole a bird will use and larger birds cannot gain access.
