Location: Fields behind Freshfields Village. Meet at Freshfields parking near the Station and car pool as needed.

Kiawah Island naturalist Jake Zadik will leading us on a walk in the fields and ponds near Freshfields Village. This event will have 1 – 2 miles of walking over uneven terrain. The environment may include the “parking” field, produce fields and borders of lake behind Andell Inn. The varied environment could provide sitings of species not normally seen on Seabrook Island.

Bring sun block, bug spray, a hat, water and binoculars.

Bird Fest 2019

This festival is a celebration of our feathered friends! Festival will include organizations such as Gryphon Den, Fish Eagle Tours, Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center, Nature Muse Imagery, Audubon South Carolina, Edisto River Adventures, Francis Marion National Forest, Coastal Expeditions, Charleston County Parks and Rec, Colonial Dorchester State Park, Artist Julie Glass, SCDNR Red Cockaded Woodpecker Program, South Carolina Bobwhite Initiative, Carolina Bird Club, Real Art, South Carolina Forestry Commission, South Carolina Waterfowl Association, Ducks Unlimited, and Santee Cooper.

Food will be available for purchase from the Miracles Tasty Express Food Truck and Live Entertainment by the Charleston Hot Shots. Special Presentations will include a guided bird walk by Audubon, A creatures of the night presentation by Gryphon Den, a photography class by Nature Muse Imagery, A presentation on “Purple Haze” a documentary on Purple Martins, and so much more!

Explore the lakes, lagoons, paths and slough at Camp St. Christopher. This event will have 1 – 2 miles of walking over uneven terrain. Fall migration should be in full swing, so we should see all the usual suspects, but will also hopefully get looks at a few migrant warblers (Louisiana Waterthrush, American Redstart, Common Yellowthroat, Black-Throated Blue), Scarlet Tanagers and Blue Grosbeaks.

Bring sun block, bug spray, a hat, water and binoculars.

Backyard birding is a hobby enjoyed by tens of millions of Americans. In fact, when the more serious birders are asked how they got involved in the hobby, nearly every one says it started by watching the birds in their yard as either a child or an adult. Here on Seabrook Island, we have the perfect habitat for birds to enjoy our yards and we want to make sure everyone who wants can enjoy this wonderful hobby! If you like, it can be done year round by people of all abilities!

During our program, we will talk about the various types of food and feeders loved by our common backyard birds on Seabrook Island. We will then help you identify these common birds, including showing photos of varying plumage, what time of year they reside on our island, what they eat, where they are commonly seen if not in your backyard and other interesting tidbits. At the end of the program, you may even decide you are ready become a citizen scientist and sign up to participate in Project FeederWatch, a program run by Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Bird Studies Canada.

Your Action Requested – Please Support TOSI Ordinance 2019-09 “Proposed Beach Rules for Pets”

Proposed Beach Rules for Pets Map, Seabrook Island, SC

As you may be aware, last winter the Town of Seabrook Island received a petition requesting that the Town Council consider proposed changes to the dates, times and locations upon which pets may be allowed “off-leash” on the beaches of Seabrook Island.

Over a period of six months, the Town Council carefully considered relevant information from a variety of sources, including Seabrook Island Birders (SIB).

The Executive Committee of SIB supports the Town Council’s belief the proposed amendments will “enhance protection of critical areas for migratory shorebirds and other wildlife, provide pet owners and their pets with great access to off-leash areas, provide beachgoers with a larger pet-free swimming area, and simplify the Town’s general requirements related to pets on the beach.”

To learn more about the process used by the Town of Seabrook Island to develop the proposed ordinance, please read the Tidelines article submitted by Mayor Ron Ciancio, Seabrook Island, on September 1, 2019.

The Town Council will present the proposed ordinance at the Seabrook Island Town Hall during a public hearing on Tuesday, September 17, 2019, at 1:00 pm. We hope many of you will be able to attend the meeting to support this ordinance. And, we hope ALL of our resident members will submit an online comment in support of the ordinance no later than Monday September 16 at 4:00 pm:

Learning Together on the Golf Course-Ocean Winds

Location: Meet at Island House (Golf Course Parking Lot next to Spinnaker Beach Houses) for ride along the golf course in golf carts.
Max: 30
Cost: None for members; $5 donation for guests

Each Monday one of the Golf Courses is closed, so join us for a morning of birding by RIDING in golf carts for at least 9-holes on Ocean Winds golf course. We expect to see a large variety of birds including Double-crested Cormorants, Egrets, Herons, Bald Eagles and other birds of prey. We should also see and hear some of the smaller birds like Tufted Titmice, Eastern Bluebirds, Northern Cardinals and some of the many warbler species. Even some fall migrants might be seen.

As always, be sure to bring your binoculars, hats and sunscreen. Water will be provided.

Join SIB for “A Birder’s Guide to Everything” – a Movie Matinee

SIB will continue its movie matinees this fall on Monday, September 16, as we present “A Birder’s Guide to Everything,” a 2013 Independent film in the adventure/comedy/drama category, starring Ben Kingsley, Kodi Smit-McPhee, James Le Gros and directed by Rob Meyer. (90 minutes).

As described on Amazon: “David Portnoy, a 15-year-old birding fanatic, thinks that he’s made the discovery of a lifetime. So, on the eve of his father’s remarriage, he escapes on an epic road trip with his best friends to solidify their place in birding history. “

Interesting Fact: Kenn Kaufmann (AKA Birding Legend) was a consultant on the film and even makes an appearance during the movie.

Rescheduled: Join us for a Learning Together: Biking and Birding the Seabrook to Kiawah Bike Path

We were rained out Labor Day weekend so let’s try this again.

Grab your bike and join us as we bike and bird along the bike path from Seabrook Island’s Lake House through Freshfields to Mingo Point on Kiawah. The path is paved and borders wooded areas, marsh and fields. Mingo Point has bird feeders which always has a variety of birds including possibly some migrating warblers. It also has access to the Kiawah River for sitings of shorebirds.

Join SIB Executive Committee Members Melanie Jerome and Judy Morr for this biking & birding trip along the bike path. We hope to see shorebirds like egrets, herons and Roseate Spoonbills in the tidal marsh areas. We will listen for passerines hoping to catch a glimpse of those heading south for the winter. And birds of prey are common to see flying overhead. Be sure to bring binoculars, camera, hats, sunscreen, bug repellant, snacks and water.
