About the Program
Many shorebirds undertake fantastic migrations each year from nesting grounds in the Arctic to wintering sites as far south as the southern tip of South America. South Carolina is an important stop over and wintering site for thousands of these long distance fliers. This presentation will highlight shorebird natural history from nesting behavior in the Arctic to wintering strategies here. Seabrook is especially important to Red Knots, a federally threatened shorebird. One of the largest flocks of this species concentrates in the spring at Captain Sam’s Inlet. Ms. Sanders will present results from migration research conducted on red knots, including an overview of the tagging project conducted on Seabrook this past spring.
About Felicia Sanders
Felicia Sanders joined South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) in 2001 and leads the Shorebird Program. SCDNR works on shorebird conservation on federal, state, county and private lands. Protection efforts include building a network of partners and volunteers that can promote and protect South Carolina’s coastal birds. The past 5 summers she has worked part of the summer in the Arctic, the nesting grounds of many shorebird species that spend the non-breeding season on South Carolina’s beaches. Ms. Sanders has a BS in Biology from Duke University and MS in Biology from Clemson University. Felicia is an adjunct assistant professor at Clemson University and College of Charleston.
