A friend on Kiawah Island sent us this picture and asked if we could identify this bird. Although we’ve never seen it on Seabrook Island, it’s a common bird during summers in the northern part of the US. Do you know what bird this is? Have you ever seen this bird on Seabrook Island? Spectacular bird. Agree — not seen him here. We often have him on our feeder in Rochester, NY.

That is a rose breasted grosbeak and we have seen in a few times in our yard but not recently. I do have a picture!

Yep, looks to be a male rose-breasted grosbeak. Just saw one yesterday in a maple tree here in Columbus, Ohio.

They are definitely rare occasional visitors to Seabrook Island. In 9 years, I have seen 2 or 3 individuals. Interestingly, unlike most birds that migrate through, the Rose-breasted Grosbeak seems to migrate through Seabrook more in the spring than the fall. Not sure if that is just an anomaly with my observations, but I have never seen one in the fall.
